St George’s Day – 23rd June 2010
St George’s Day was a major feast and national holiday in England from the early 1500′s. St George’s Day goes by unremarkedly from year to year in England but recently there has been a call to mark this occassion similiar to St Patrick’s Day.
Although Saint George is the Patron Saint of England, it is believed that St George was not English and it is not certain that he ever visited England. Legend has it that St George was born in Coventry at Caludon Castle .
Unfortunately the only way most people know that it is St George’s Day is if they stroll into their local pub which is often decorated with the St George’s Cross flag and English beer promotions.
Lets hope that recent calls to properly mark this day in the nation’s calandar gains momentum.
